Yesterday at the advice of a coworker, I drove to the park in a small town I was temporarily working in. OH NO! Its nothing more than a concrete path that is a little over 1/2 a mile running around the ball park! I could feel the dread coming over me and all motivation out the window. I did however begin the dreaded run. Why do I dread the round and round ?
When I was a freshman in college I went to the track to see a girl who was rather overweight running around the track. I thought, "I'm not overweight so I can do that". Uh no, I was mistaken. After about 2 laps I was out. So being the determined person I am, I decided I would take up running. My running began at, you guessed it: the track. Round and round I ran every night. My drive was I was getting stronger and was tacking on more and more miles until I was up to 5 and then 7 miles. I started to branch out into the neighborhoods because..... the round and round was boring! Now I hate, HATE, the track!
So back to the present. I was trying to motivate myself to do this and decided it would be a speed workout. Yes, a speedworkout is exactly what I needed. My running base was getting stronger and faster. Speedworkouts are exactly what makes you stronger and gets your body used to moving faster instead of staying in a rut. I finished a rather short time of speedworkouts but man oh man, I was moving faster than I had in years. It felt good. It really opened my eyes to possiblities to better times.
We all have days where we just DO NOT want to run or lift weights, whatever your exercise is you just have those days. This is a turning point for you. Are you committed or just a weekend warrior? If you are committed you will get out there and do it and then smile afterwards. For those of us who have been working out in some fashion for a long time have learned the scorned feeling when we don't exercise. Its just not worth it. After you feel that failure you won't be as likely to forgo your workout.
What motivates you is key to these moments. For me its envisioning the cool air, new shoes, new music, new headphones, or conquoring the hills. I'll even find a new route, which my favorite kind of route is a back country road that is dirt and shade. You will find out what gets you out the door and use it as your weapon against the demon. Don't be discouraged when you can't get motivated because it does get better.
Now I don't just run. I do P90X, Insanity, Turbo Fire, and any other kick boxing, kick-my-butt workouts. Throwing those into the mix definitely helps me keep moving. So when I say new gear this another form of gear. You have to keep it fresh! Plus these workouts use different body parts than running and quite frankly you can't replace one for the other. So I usually alternate. I have been running for about 30 years. HA! Oh my gosh! 30! Well anyway, I also have been doing these workouts for about 2 years. I love them! I feel so bad to the bone when I finish! Actually my body is pretty svelte when I do.
Hey I'm 48 and still moving pretty good. I figure I'm not a good target for a mugging and if someone were to try to mug me they better run fast and be able to dodge my right hook! Ha,ha.
This is my first blog. I love being fit and wish I had started this sooner. If you need a daily dose of something fitness and real this is your stop. WE are all in this together . Its not easy staying fit in this society of laziness and convenience. Our bodies are made to do work. So we have to work our bodies hard or we get soft. Talk to you again!
